City to enlarge its senior center

Perris will expand its senior center with a $1.8 million federal grant.

The 35-year-old Perris Senior Center will be enlarged by 2,250 square feet and will undergo several upgrades, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Improvements to the facility at 100 N. D St. will include a renovated kitchen and an expanded multipurpose room.

Currently, that room can only handle 68 people at one time. Nearly 25 percent of Perris’ population is above the age of 50, which creates a need for an expanded building and more services.

A construction schedule was not released.

The funding was arranged by Rep. Mark Takano, D-Riverside. About $1.6 million will be spent on the building expansion and renovation, the remaining $200,000 on body cameras for code enforcement officers.

“It’s not often we get a check for $1.8 million, but we are excited and grateful, so we’re going to run with it,” said Mayor Michael M. Vargas in the statement.
