City to Redirect Federal Funding

Cathedral City wants to take unspent funds from its community development block grant program and use it to pay for a public improvement project that will help low and moderate-income residents.

The excess grants, which were distributed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, total approximately $485,000 and will be used to install sidewalks, curbs and gutters in the city’s Whitewater neighborhood, according to statement on the city’s website.

The move will require an amendment to the city’s block grant annual action plan from the previous two fiscal years.

During the previous two years, Cathedral City had money left over from HUD-related projects that didn’t cost as much as originally estimated. The amendment is needed because the improvement project was not originally going to be paid for with HUD funding, according to the statement.
