County to upgrade part of downtown San Bernardino

San Bernardino County will make $2.5 million worth of upgrades to an unincorporated pocket in downtown San Bernardino.

The Little Third Street and Little Tippecanoe Avenue improvement project will cover approximately one-half of a mile and will include street widening, and installation of sidewalks and street lights, according to a statement on the county’s website.

Curb ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act also will be built.

The county public works department will be in charge of construction. The project, which is undergoing environmental review, is being done primarily to make certain neighborhood children have a safe walk to and from school.

“Living in San Bernardino myself, I realize how important it is for our students to have safe routes to and from school,” and Ana Applegate, assistant superintendent of the San Bernardino County Unified School District, during a ceremony announcing the project. “Anything that leads to the betterment of our students we hope … will come back to our community as well.”

Construction is expected to begin in September 2024. Much of the project will be paid for with funds from Measure I, a half-cent sales tax passed by county voters to help pay for transportation projects, according to the statement.
