Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert campus has received a grant that will support its nursing program that assists people living on the street.
The $88,000 donation from the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation will allow the university’s Nursing Street Medicine Program to improve its treatment of unsheltered and underserved individuals in the Coachella Valley, according to a statement on Cal State San Bernardino’s website.
The grant will also provide hands-on training for Cal State San Bernardino’s nursing students.
“This funding enables us to deepen our impact in the community while preparing our students to lead with compassion, competence and a commitment to health equity,” said Diane Vines, executive director of the street medicine program, in a statement. “This grant is a vote of confidence in our students, our faculty and our mission to serve.”
The street medicine program puts nursing faculty and nursing students into the field, where they deliver basic healthcare: treatment of wounds, disease management, glucose monitoring, foot soaks, and evaluations of behavioral health. They also refer patients to primary and specialty care providers.
Clinics are held several locations, including shelters, free food program locations, homeless encampments, and senior housing, according to the statement.
