Cal State San Bernardino has been designated a Research 2 university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
The university was recognized for its going from a master’s degree institution to one that awards doctorates for research and scholarship, according to a statement on the school’s website.
“This is great and well-deserved news,” said President Tomás D. Morales in the statement. “The new Research 2 designation reflects the dedication and determination of our faculty, staff and administrators to develop and offer programs and research opportunities to benefit and advance our students as they pursue their education.”
The Research 2 classification puts Cal State San Bernardino among the top seven percent of colleges and universities in the United States. Out of 3,900 institutions of higher learning,137 are classified Research 1 and 133 are Research 2, according to the statement.
