Cal State San Bernardino and UC Riverside have been ranked among the top universities in the United States by Washington Monthly magazine.
The publication rated Cal State San Bernardino 29th and UC Riverside 64th on its 2023 National University Rankings, which are based on their contribution to the public good in three categories: social mobility, research, and promoting public service.
No other Inland Empire school made the list of 400 four-year colleges and universities. Harvard, Stanford, MIT, University of Pennsylvania, and Princeton made up the top five.

Founded in 1969, Washington Monthly is a nonprofit journal of politics and government based in Washington, D.C. It’s known for its rankings of colleges and universities, which are seen by many as an alternative to similar rankings by Forbes and U.S. News & World Report.
