UC Riverside has received a $1.6 million federal grant that will help pay for a university program that helps underprivileged students prepare for college.
The five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education is earmarked for Educational Talent Search, which helps students get into two and four-year colleges.
“This grant renewal is proof that our work has impact,” said Alicia Velazquez, executive director of educational and community outreach programs at UC Riverside, in a statement. “Students from low-income backgrounds deserve [a chance at a college education], and we are here to serve them,”
Specifically, the grant will aid nearly 600 students from Arroyo Valley, Indian Springs, San Bernardino, Pacific, and San Gorgonio high schools, all within the San Bernardino City Unified School District.
UCR officials submitted a 100-page proposal. The school scored a perfect grade for its application and received extra credit for explaining how similar grants have helped Educational Talent Search, according to Velazquez.
