Reconstruction of the Hamner Avenue Bridge in Norco has been completed.
The bridge was officially reopened Aug. 26 in a ceremony at Eastvale Community Park, according to a statement on Riverside County’s website.
The 85-year-old structure has been renamed the Mayor Berwin Hanna Bridge in honor of the former Norco mayor. It was originally named for Supervisor John Thomas Hamner, who served on the board from 1902 to 1922.
The $71 million project took more than three and a half years to complete. It was paid for with federal, state, and local funding.
“This bridge is a critical link for our communities here in Riverside County and beyond,” said Supervisor Karen Spiegel in the statement. “At a time of tremendous population growth in our county, construction of the six-lane bridge will benefit motorists, residents, and visitors for years to come.”
The new bridge spans the Santa Ana River. It’s 1,200 feet long and has a four-foot-wide median and shoulders, along with a 12-foot-wide multipurpose trail that is expected to open this summer, according to the statement.
