Temecula wants more affordable housing.
The city wants to create a special zoning designation called an “Affordable Housing Overlay” that would encourage the development of roughly 2,000 affordable housing units on various properties throughout the city, according to a report that originally appeared in The Press-Enterprise.
Such a designation would be applied to parcels that total nearly 200 acres, according to the report.
The Temecula Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the proposal, which is part of an updated housing element, at its regular meeting Wednesday.
State law requires cities to use housing elements to show how they will accommodate different kinds of housing within the restrictions of the municipality’s own zoning laws, according to the report.
