Inland Empire Utility to Get Federal Money

Riverside Public Utilities will receive funding from the U.S. Department of Energy that it will use for research and development.

Data from that effort will help the federal agency update the United States electric grid system, according to an RPU statement.

Riverside is one of several providers of public power that have been selected to help implement the energy department’s Grid Modernization System, which is aimed at integrating conventional and renewable sources of energy.

The program will also make certain the grid is strong enough to withstand problems created by cybersecurity issues and climate change, according to the statement.

Officials with the energy department announced last month that they expect to spend up to $220 million during the next three years on the Grid Modernization System. Riverside’s funding was not announced.
