Hemet’s plan to outsource its fire prevention and paramedic services to Riverside County has cleared one legal hurdle.
Superior Court Judge John D. Molloy has denied a motion by the Hemet Firefighters Association that would have prevented the city from eliminating its 106-year-old department, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.
At the same time, Judge Molloy set a trial date for July 1. That should settle the dispute well before July 1, when the new agreement with the county is scheduled to take effect, according to the report.
The City Council voted 3-2 last month to contract with the county for fire and paramedic services in an attempt to save money. The firefighters union contends that the move would violate the vested interests of the city’s firefighters and would disrupt the minimum response times established for fire calls, the report stated.
