Dr. Geoffrey Leung has been named Riverside County’s health officer.
Leung replaces Dr. Cameron Kaiser, who was removed last week by county Chief Executive Officer Jeff Van Wagenen, according to a statement on the county’s website.
No explanation for Kaiser’s dismissal was given.
Leung has been an “integral member” of the county’s COVID-19 response team for the past year, and since December has led its vaccine distribution, according to the statement.
“I am honored to serve in this new capacity and look forward to continuing the important work of the department as we focus on recovering from this pandemic,” Leung said in the statement. “Public health, at its core, is about protecting communities from disease, preserving health and prolonging life.”
