Library to get makeover

Riverside will spend $22 million renovating the city’s main library.

The building at 3518 Mission Ave. will he retrofitted with a ground-floor auditorium, an area for teens and other upgrades, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.

City Council members voted 6-0 Tuesday to approve the plan, with Councilman Andy Melendrez abstaining.

Tonya Kennon, director of the Riverside Public Library, proposed the improvements with the goal of giving the downtown library a more modern feel. Besides moving the library to the first floor, entries would be added on Orange and Sixth streets and the outside plaza and back of the building will be renovated.

Councilman Melendrez declined to vote because he owns property within 500 feet of the library. The city has not determined how it will pay for the renovation, the report stated.
