An organ procurement organization is participating in National Donate Life Month, a program designed to get more people to become eye, organ, kidney, and tissue donors.
More than 100,000 people nationwide, including 20,000 in California, are waiting to receive a life-saving heart, liver, lung, kidney or pancreas transplant, according to OneLegacy in Azusa.
Unfortunately, there are not enough donors to meet that need, less than one percent of all deaths include organs that can be donated. When a donation is possible, one donor can save eight people, and improve the lives of 75 more, by donating their corneas and tissue, according to One Legacy.
In April, the organization will participate in several community outreach programs, including encouraging elected city and county to issue proclamations for Donate Life Month.
OneLegacy serves Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Kern counties. It works with more than 200 hospitals, 10 transplant centers, approximately 20 million donors, according to a statement.
