Major retailer nixes High Desert store

Target has reportedly dropped plans to build a super store in Victorville.

The Minneapolis-based retailer pulled out of the project about one month ago without explaining why, according to a report first published in the Victorville Daily Press.

Victorville officials have taken no action on the project, which was planned for the southeast corner of Roy Rogers Drive and Amargosa Road, since last December.

Some are speculating that the company’s recent financial woes have trickled down to the Victorville project: in January, Target laid off 475 workers and eliminated 700 open positions in the aftermath of disappointing sales and a much-publicized data breach in which computers hackers stole information from an estimated 110 million Target shoppers.
