Mark Takano, D-Riverside

Rep. Mark Takano has been named to the House Education and Workforce Committee.

Immediately following his appointment, the Riverside Democrat and former high school teacher resigned his seat on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, according to a statement posted on Takano’s Congressional website.

Takano, who was elected to Congress in 2012, spent more than 20 years as a classroom instructor in Riverside County and was a member of the Riverside Community College Board of Trustees. He is an outspoken critic of the for-profit college system, which he believes saddles students with too much debt, and is a strong supporter of labor and workforce protections.

“I have a unique perspective on how to improve our education system and the lives of our nation’s workers,” Takano said in the statement. “It is a perspective that is not influenced by special interests, but rather the idea that we should take care of our workers and that America should be the best-educated nation in the world.”
