Mayor to speak at conference

Moreno Valley Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez will be the Distinguished Keynote Speaker at Moreno Valley College’s 2017 commencement ceremony.

Gutierrez, who graduated from Moreno Valley College in 2004, plans to discuss with students his experiences and life lessons and urge them to get involved in community affairs, according to a statement on the city’s website.

“Moreno Valley College holds a special place in my heart,” Gutierrez said in the statement.  “I’m humbled by the opportunity to speak to [the] graduates, as they will be our future leaders in education, business, and government.”

Gutierrez, who taught at the college, was elected to the Moreno Valley City Council in 2013. Last year, he became the city’s first directly elected mayor.

Commencement ceremonies are scheduled to be held at 5:30 p.m. June 8 at College Park on the Moreno Valley College campus.
