Riverside County might take $1.5 million budgeted for UC Riverside’s medical school and use it on the county-owned hospital in Moreno Valley.
The money would be diverted to pay for equipment at Riverside County Regional Medical Center, which has a history of financial problems, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.
That recommendation was part of a report on the county’s finances that the Board of Supervisors is scheduled to discuss Monday.
The study details a number of the county’s current budget problems, including multi-million dollar shortfalls predicted for the sheriff’s and fire departments.
To pay for the new equipment, the county is proposing ending its annual $1.5 million commitment to the medical school, which trains its students at the hospital. The medical school opened two years ago.
The medical center, which provides affordable care to many of Riverside County’s low income residents, has at times approached budget shortfalls of $50 million. The county recently paid a consulting firm $26 million to repair the hospital’s finances according to the report.
