As southeastern Riverside County continues to grow, local municipalities are beginning to look at expansion projects to address freeway congestion.
The City of Menifee is expanding the existing interchange off I-215 at Newport Road with a $48.4 million interchange project. The project would widen Newport Road to six lanes and create a partial cloverleaf interchange, to help alleviate traffic congestion on the freeway’s major off ramp.
The project is sponsored by: Menifee Moving Safely, U.S. Department of Transportation, CalTrans, Western Riverside Council of Governments (WRCOG), the County of Riverside, Riverside County Transportation Commission and the City of Menifee.
Funding for the project is coming from a combination of sources, including Menifee Valley Road and Bridge Benefit District (RBBD), WCOG’s Transportation Uniform Mitigation Fee, City of Menifee, Eastern Municipal Water District and the Gas Company.
The City estimates that 62,000 cars will travel on Newport Road in 2030, up from the current forecast of 38,000 cars per day.
Construction began in April 2015 and is expected to continue through the end of 2016.
