Men’s clothing store leaves San Bernardino

Men’s Wearhouse, the popular dress clothes chain, has closed its only San Bernardino store.

The store at 895 South E St. shut its doors Aug. 23, reassigned its employees and moved its inventory to its Redlands store at 9990 Alabama St., according to a manager there who declined to give his name.

Men’s Wearhouse occupied the San Bernardino space near Inland Center Mall and the National Orange Show Events Center for about 20 years. Before that it belonged to C&R Clothiers, which declared bankruptcy in 1996 and sold some of its stores to Men’s Wearhouse.

“Our Redlands store is a better spot,” said the manager, who said he was not sure how many people worked at the former San Bernardino store or where they are working now. “It’s basically a relocation.”

The closure comes at an unusual time. Not only is the economy rebounding but the Houston-based chain announced in March that it had merged with Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Inc. Two months later, Men’s Wearhouse announced it plans to open 100 stores during the next three years.

Men’s Wearhouse still has seven locations in the Inland Empire, including two stores in Redlands and one in Montclair, according to the company’s website.
