Mommie Helen’s Owner Dies, Bakery Remains Open

Dorothy Pryor Rose, known as “Mommie Helen” of The Original Mommie Helen’s Bakery in San Bernardino, died January 17 at age 69. The bakery, which Rose established 16 years ago in Colton, will continue to operate at the E Street site it relocated to in May 2015. Her daughter, Tedra Rose, now owns the establishment.

“I have to continue my mother’s legacy and vision,” Tedra Rose said.

In 2014, faced with legal challenges involving property managers, Dorothy Rose sought a new location under pressure. At the time, she told reporters, “Every city wanted me. But San Bernardino needs me.” Rose was born in San Bernardino in 1947.

During the move, the San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed the business with open arms. Dorothy Rose invested $100,000 to remodel the new 7,000-square-foot location.

Mommie Helen’s generally employs a staff of six full-time workers, although dozens are hired on temporarily during the holidays. There are several celebrity customers, including actors, lifestyle moguls and professional athletes.

Mommie Helen’s continues to operate at 1440 S. E Street in San Bernardino, and can be reached by phone at (909) 384-7052. Hours of operation are 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
