Moreno Valley looks to fill council seat

Moreno Valley is accepting applications from residents interested in finishing the District 2 city council term, which became vacant when Councilwoman Carla J. Thornton passed away last month following an illness.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, live in District 2 and be registered to vote in Moreno Valley, according to a statement on the city’s website.

The current vacant term runs through 2022. District 2 includes most of the city that is north of State Route 60.

The mayor and city council have until March 22 to appoint someone to fill the seat. If they don’t, a special election will be held on the Nov. 2, 2021 ballot with the winner to serve the term’s remaining one year.

“The application process will give us a good sense of the community’s interest in the position,” said Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez in the statement.  “Council members and I will have the opportunity to screen applications and interview anyone who applies. After that, we will decide whether to appoint or let the vacancy be filled by voters.”

Deadline to apply is 4 p.m. Feb. 25. The online application can be found at www.MoVal.org/council.
