Moreno Valley looks to help vets get hired

Moreno Valley has begun a program designed to help military veterans get jobs.

On May 7, the city council approved Hire a MoVal Veteran Program, which means city businesses can receive up to $5,000 for hiring a city resident who served in the armed forces, according to a statement on the city’s website.

The Hire a MoVal Veteran program is part of the city’s Hire MoVal program, which allows businesses to receive $1,000 each veteran they hire, with a limit of five hires per business.

The program was proposed by Councilwoman Carla Thornton.

To be eligible a business must have an active business license, be located in Moreno Valley and keep the employee for at least six months at a minimum of 20 hours per week.

“Moreno Valley veterans play a vital role in the city’s economic development strategy,” said Mayor Yxstian A. Gutierrez in the statement. “With every federal dollar veterans spend in the community on housing, education, food or entertainment, they are contributing to our local economy.”

Participants must be a Moreno Valley resident, have served a minimum of 90 days and have received an honorable discharge. For more information visit www.moval.org/hiremoval.
