Moreno Valley Mall to reopen

The Moreno Valley Mall has been cleared to reopen.

Two weeks after most of the shopping center was shut down because of multiple fire code violations, the mall will be allowed to return to business March 5, according to a statement on the city’s website.

“I’m pleased that we were able to reach a resolution that protects public safety and allows the Moreno Valley Mall to reopen,” said Mayor Ulises Cabrera in the statement. “From the beginning, our priority has been ensuring the safety of our residents, workers, and businesses. I’m glad they can now reopen their doors, return to work, and continue serving our community.”

City officials ordered the closure two weeks ago after uncovering the violations, including deficiencies in the fire alarm system, smoke control system, fire doors, fire standpipe systems, fire/smoke dampers, emergency generators, and emergency lighting.

After an inspection March 4, fire department officials determined the mall had made “incremental progress” toward fixing the deficiencies and that the mall could be safely reopened.

Mall ownership has until March 31 to correct all of the issues or the mall will be shut down again, according to the statement.
