MoVal looks to speed up “granny unit” construction

Moreno Valley is trying to make it easier to build accessory dwelling units. ADU For You provides residents with pre-approved plans for those units for free, which eliminates the need to hire an architect or a designer, according to a statement on the city’s website.

The program will also speed up the approval process for anything not related to construction so the units can be built quicker.

“(ADU For You) simplifies the design/build process, provides easy-to-follow resources, and reduces out-of-pocket costs for current and future Moreno Valley residents,” Mayor Ulises Cabrera said in the statement. “By making it easier to create more housing, this program helps address the housing crisis.”

Seven city-owned, pre-approved plans are available for free, including studio and one-, two-, or three-bedroom designs. To gain approval, the dwelling unit – often called a granny unit – must be part of an existing single-family home or duplex.
