MoVal recognized for housing policy

Moreno Valley has received a pro-housing designation from the California Department of Housing and Community Development.

That classification, which Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on July 14, means Moreno Valley has priority regarding some state grant programs, including the Pro-Housing Incentive Pilot grant and the Affordable Housing & Sustainable Communities funding program, according to a statement on the city’s website.

“Moreno Valley has always been at the forefront of providing housing opportunities for all, and it is gratifying to see our hard work recognized at the state level,” said Mayor Ulises Cabrera in the statement. “Amid a housing crisis affecting every corner of California, this designation signifies Moreno Valley is providing quality housing for those who need it.”

The Pro-Housing Designation Program was established in the 2019-2020 fiscal year budget. It recognizes local governments that promote housing development and encourages cities and counties to establish policies that speed up housing production.

Moreno Valley is one of 27 jurisdictions, out of 540, to receive the designation, according to the statement.
