Mary Helen Ybarra has been appointed to the Corona-Norco Unified School District board.

Ybarra, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the board two years ago, was appointed Tuesday to a two-year term, according to a report published by The Press-Enterprise.

Ybarra replaces Michell Skipworth, who stepped down last month for family and medical reasons. She was appointed by a 3-1 vote.

A longtime PTA activist, Ybarra will represent Trustee Area Three, which covers central and north Corona, the report stated.

Several community members urged that Ybarra, one of seven people looking to fill the vacancy, be appointed to the board.

Ybarra also had the support of Richard Martinez, whose wife Sharon served on the board for 13 years. Sharon Martinez, who campaigned with Ybarra in 2012, died last year of scleroderma, a systemic autoimmune disease, according to the report.
