A lecturer at Cal State San Bernardino has been recognized for his efforts to mentor students.

Jose Rivera has been named a recipient of the 2014 Young Professional Mentor award by the University of Alabama’s Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations, according to a report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

He will be one of six people honored at an awards banquet Oct. 30 in Chicago.

Rivera, who lectures in the school’s Communications Studies Department, is an alumnus of Cal State San Bernardino and is the first member of his family to attend college.

He returned to school at 27 to earn his degree, according to the report.

Rivera advises students on what classes to take, points them toward internships they might be eligible for, helps them find financial aid and assists them with deadlines and application forms.
