New Plan for Inland Empire Golf Course

The Rancho Cucamonga Planning Commission on Wednesday approved a plan to convert Empire Lakes Golf Course into an urban community.

By a 4-1 vote, the commission approved the project proposed by the Lewis Group of Companies in Upland, according to the city’s planning department.

Commissioner Richard Fletcher cast the dissenting vote.

The Lewis Group, which has been building houses in Southern California since the mid-1950s, is scheduled to purchase the golf course at the end of next month.

The company plans to build between 2,650 and 3,450 houses on the property, along with some rental units. The project will also include retail, recreation and a community center.

Home prices are expected to top out at $400,000. Lewis Group officials hope the project, which will be built near the city’s Metrolink station, will appeal to younger buyers who want to live near where they work.

The Planning Commission got its first look at the project April 13 but delayed its vote. The City Council is scheduled to hear the proposal on May 18.
