Newkirk named UofR president

Krista L. Newkirk has been named president of the University of Redlands.

Currently the president of Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., Newkirk, will be the first female president in the university’s 114-year history, according to a statement on the school’s website.

She is scheduled to assume her new duties in July.

“This is an especially important time in the history of the university,” Newkirk said in the statement. “I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and working with the dedicated and talented faculty, staff, trustees, students, and alumni. As we continue to reassess what the higher education landscape will look like following the pandemic, this is our opportunity to create together a bright future.”

Newkirk succeeds Ralph W. Kuncl, who is scheduled to retire June 30 after nine years as head of the university.

During Kunci’s tenure, the university secured a train station for the new Arrow line on the main Redlands campus and added a school and campus in Northern California through a merger with San Francisco Theological Seminary. It is near completion of a $200 million fundraising campaign called Forever Yours.

The President’s Cabinet will run the university in the period between presidents, according to the statement.
