Oden to lead Palm Springs parade

Ron Oden will serve as grand marshal in Palm Springs’ 39th annual Black History Parade & Town Fair.

Oden, the city’s first African American mayor, will be joined by Marcus Funchess, the first African American Superintendent of Palm Springs Unified School District, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Oden was mayor from 2003 to 2007.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Baristo Road and travel along Alejo Road. The Palm Springs Air Museum will conduct a flyover of P-51 Mustangs, each painted with a crimson red tail in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II, the first group of African-American pilots in the U.S. Armed Forces.
