OIA adds Mexico City flights

Aeromexico will offer roundtrip flights between Ontario International Airport and Mexico City starting next month.

The flights, on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, are scheduled to start April 6, airport officials announced Wednesday.

Once those flights begin, Aeromexico will operate eight international flights out of Ontario International: the airline, the largest in Mexico, already operates four flights a week from there to Guadalajara.

The flights will leave Ontario at 1:05 a.m. and arrive in Mexico City at 7:40 a.m. Return flights will leave Mexico City at 9:10 p.m. local time and arrive in Ontario at 11:25 p.m.

Mexico City is one hour ahead of the west coast.

Ontario International will now provide service to 15 major cities.

“Anything that gives our passengers more service and more options is a good thing,” said Maria Tesoro, spokeswoman for Ontario International. “The airport has seen a decline in passenger traffic since 2007, and we’re going to do whatever we can to reverse that.”

Los Angeles World Airports officials are negotiating an agreement with Aeromexico under which the airline’s first six months of landing fees would be waived after the airline provided 12 consecutive months of service to and from Ontario International, Tesoro said.

Los Angeles World Airports is a Los Angeles city agency. Better known as LAWA, it owns Ontario International and Los Angeles International airports as well as several other smaller airports in the greater Los Angeles market.

Aeromexico last served Mexico City from Ontario International in 2000, according to an airport statement.
