After years of declining passenger traffic, Ontario International Airport might be starting a comeback.
The airport attracted slightly more than three million passengers during the first nine months of this year, up 3.74 percent compared with the same period in 2013, according to data released Tuesday by Los Angeles World Airports.
Passenger numbers were up 8.4 percent year-over-year in September, the largest monthly increase this year, said LAWA, the agency that owns and operates Ontario International and Los Angeles International airports.
Much of the increase can be attributed to international traffic at the airport: AeroMexico and Volaris, served nearly 65,000 passengers during the first nine months of the year, a 77.3 percent year-over-year increase according to LAWA.
Both airlines provide a total of seven non-stop flights a day between Ontario and Guadalajara.
Ontario is currently trying to get control of the airport away from the city of Los Angeles.
