Dena M. Smith, San Bernardino County’s chief operating officer, will serve as the county’s interim chief executive officer beginning April 1.
Smith will serve while the county conducts a nationwide search to replace Greg Devereaux, who announced his retirement in January, according to a statement.
Devereaux, who spent seven years as the county’s top executive, will serve as an advisor to the county once he steps down.
Smith has worked for the county since 1999. She began as chief learning officer, then was clerk of the board and director of land use services. Smith was promoted to deputy executive officer in 2011 and chief operating officer last year, according to the statement.
