On The Move

Will Allen, one of the country’s premiere urban farmers, will be the keynote speaker at GrowRIVERSIDE 2017, a three-day event scheduled to be held March 29-31.

Allen is the founder of Growing Power, a large not-for-profit urban agriculture project in Milwaukee, according to a statement released by the city.

A former professional basketball player, Allen received a coveted Genius Grant from the MacArthur Foundation in 2008 for his work on urban farming and producing sustainable food. Those grants are presented annually to about 20 to 30 people who perform outstanding work in their particular field, generally art, science, education or medicine. They’re restricted to U.S. residents.

Allen will discuss several issues, including the growing systems he uses and Growing Power’s operation as an urban farm, according to the statement.

GrowRIVERSIDE, one of the city’s largest annual events, seeks to create food and agricultural events throughout the Inland Empire. It will be held at the Tom & Vi Zapara School of Business at La Sierra University.
