A former creative writing teacher at UC Riverside has been named the United States’ poet laureate.
Juan Felipe Herrera is the nation’s 21st poet in chief and the first Latino to hold that prestigious title, according to multiple published reports.
He will serve for two year. The U.S. Library of Congress announced Herrera’s appointment Wednesday.
Herrera, who has served as California’s poet laureate, is the son of migrant farm workers. He resigned from UCR in March and is now a visiting professor at the University of Washington, the reports stated.
