Wednesday was the first day of school for Cuauhtemoc Avila, the new superintendent of the Rialto Unified School District.
Avila spent most of the day touring classroom and visiting students, according to a report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.
Avila, who took over as superintendent last month, previously worked for the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
He has been a principal at elementary, middle and high schools, and has been in charge of a continuation school for at-risk student. This is his first time working as a superintendent, the report stated.
The district, which serves more than 26,000 students, has had to deal with several controversies during the past few years, including an embezzlement scandal, Holocaust-denial materials being distributed to its eighth-grade students and audits that turned up problems with the district’s contracting and purchasing standards, the report stated.
