A national group that encourages women to run for public office has named Perris Mayor Pro Tem Tonya Burke a finalist for its Emerging Leader award.
Burke, who was elected to the city council last year, is one of six finalists nationwide for the award given out by Emerge America and the only finalist from California, according to a city statement.
“It is a great honor to be considered from among thousands of other women,” Burke said.
Based in San Francisco, Emerge America encourages women to run for public office as Democrats, effect public policy and improve the lives of the disenfranchised in their communities.
It currently has affiliates in 14 states, according to the organization’s website.
The winner of the Emerging Leader award will be named during a ceremony scheduled to be held Monday in San Francisco.
