On The Move

Larry Walker, San Bernardino County’s longtime auditor-controller, treasurer and tax collector, has announced his retirement.

Walker, who has held elected office for more than 30 years, will step down as of March 5, according to a news release posted Wednesday on the county’s website.

“This has been a difficult decision, arrived at over many months of thoughtful and prayerful consideration,” Walker said in the release. “I cannot single out a specific factor or a major reason – I have simply decided that, for my family, for the County, and for me, this is the right time to go.”

Walker was in charge of collecting taxes and overseeing audits. He was elected to his first four-year term in 1998 and was reelected in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014.

Walker began his political career in 1978, when he was elected to the Chino City Council. He was a member of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors from 1986 to 1994.

County regulations require that someone be appointed to serve the rest of Walker’s term, which ends in two years. A special board meeting will be held next week to discuss the process for identifying Walker’s replacement, according to a second statement posted on the county’s website.
