Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam will speak March 11 at Riverside City Hall.
Putnam, called “the most influential academic in the world” by the Times of London for his research into social capital, will discuss his latest book, “Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis,” according to a statement released by the city of Riverside.
Putnam’s best-known work is “Bowling Alone,” which examined the increasing isolation and lack of community in U.S. society. His latest book is a breakdown of the growing inequality gap in the United States and why most U.S residents have less chance for upward mobility than they once did.
The event, which is being sponsored by the Riverside Public Library and the UC Riverside School of Public Policy, is free and open to the public. It’s scheduled to be held from 2-3 p.m. at the Art Pick Council Chamber, 3900 Main St.
“Riverside is blessed to have a library that can bring such a distinguished speaker to our city,” Mayor Rusty Bailey said in the statement.
Putnam is scheduled to speak the same day at UC Riverside.
