Palm Springs is conducting an online survey regarding its proposed change to a citywide, at-large mayor.
The Palm Springs Mayoral Position Community Survey will help the city council decide whether to replace the current system, under which the position is rotated among five council members, according to a statement on the city’s website.
All residents are encouraged to participate.
Currently, council members take turns serving a one-year term as mayor, a largely ceremonial position. Palm Springs began using that system in 2019 in order to comply with the California Voting Rights Act.
Proponents believe that an at-large mayor not beholden to one district would provide stronger leadership for the entire city.
The survey is available at EngagePalmSprings.com.
