ONT nearly back to pre-pandemic passenger levels

ONT looking forward to Labor Day weekend

Ontario International Airport officials are expecting a busy Labor Day weekend.

More than 102,000 passengers are expected to pass through the airport during the five-day weekend that will run from Aug. 31 through Sept. 4, according to a statement on the airport’s website.

That prediction is based on current airline schedules. If it holds true, it will be a 16.6 percent increase from Labor Day weekend last year and 27.5 higher than 2019, the year before the pandemic.

One reason for optimism is Ontario International’s recent performance: during the past three months, it has set all-time records for passenger volume at the 55-year-old airport.

“The air travel industry is highly competitive, yet Ontario is growing passenger volume month after month,” said Atif Elkadi, the Ontario International Airport Authority’s chief executive officer, in the statement.

Last year, Ontario International handled more than 87,000 Labor Day weekend travelers. In 2019, the passenger count during the traditional end-of-summer weekend topped 80,000, according to the statement.
