Work has begun on a $15 million renovation and expansion of the Carnegie Library in Beaumont.
The 111-year-old building will be updated to meet earthquake standards, and a 9,000-square-foot structure will be added to improve services and make the building more accessible, according to a statement.
Located at 125 E St., the Carnegie Library is one of the oldest buildings in Beaumont, which incorporated in 1912. The renovation is will be done in two phases and is expected to be completed in 2026.
The first phase will be site preparation, including the demolition of several structures, construction of the extension and development of a south parking lot. The second phase will consist of renovating the original library, and completion of a parking lot on the east side of the project.
The renovated library will cover 20,700 square feet, and will feature modern reading spaces and updated technology, according to the statement
