Palm Springs has a new director of community and economic development.
Jay Virata, currently Poway’s economic development manager and a former regional administrator with Los Angeles’ community redevelopment agency, will take over June 19, according to a statement on Palm Springs’ website.
Virata has worked in Poway for the last four years and in Los Angeles for six years before that. He was also economic development project in manager in Monterey Park for seven years, according to the statement.
In Los Angeles, Virata helped negotiate and complete several major development transactions, including a parking lot at The Broad, a contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles named after philanthropist Eli Broad, who financed the facility.
“Jay Virata has a wealth of experience directing successful community and economic development projects that have transformed California cities for the better,” City Manager David H. Ready said in the statement. “There is no doubt Jay’s extensive development expertise will be a tremendous asset to our community. We are excited to welcome him to Palm Springs and our executive management team at City Hall.”
