Palm Springs has modified its rules regarding vacation rentals in order to help victims of the Los Angeles fires.
The temporary changes approved by the city council began Jan. 7 and are scheduled to run through Feb. 27, according to a statement on the city’s website.
During that time, owners of vacation rental properties may-offer accommodation of up to 28 days to evacuees without having those rentals count against the property owners’ allotted rentals for the year.
Those will be considered “friends and family” bookings, which are exempt from the usual rental caps and are retroactive to the date the emergency was declared.
“This is an opportunity for us to do what we can short-term to help during a difficult time,” said Mayor Ron deHarte said in the statement. “We hope this effort makes a meaningful difference for those who need a safe haven to stay.”
