Palm Springs and Riverside County have received $19 million in state assistance to help fight homelessness.
Both were co-applicants for the funding from the second round of Project Homekey, which creates low-cost housing for homeless people by renovating hotels, motels and vacant apartments, according to a statement on the Palm Springs website.
The money will be used to build a “navigation center” at 3589 McCarthy Road in the northern part of the city, land Palm Spring purchased earlier this year for nearly $6 million.
As planned the center will have 50 to 60 beds and 80 shelters, along with services to help people find permanent housing, according to reports.
“We couldn’t be more grateful and excited about today’s announcement of the state’s investment in the Palm Springs Navigation Center,” Mayor Lisa Middleton said in the statement. “This funding will allow us to make a significant impact … for our homeless residents.”
Riverside County has already set aside $5.7 million from the fourth district’s federal American Rescue Plan Act funding, while Palm Springs is contributing $5.3 million of its state Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention funds.
With the $19 million state grant, the budget to develop the Navigation Center is now $30 million.
