Palm Springs will pay its residents to remove their lawns.
The city has agreed to pay $3 per square foot for turf removal, matching an offer made by the Desert Water Agency in a joint effort to encourage water conservation during the drought, according to a statement on the city’s website.
City council members voted Oct. 27 to spend $250,000 on the rebate program. Residents who receive a rebate must minimize their use of artificial turf if that’s how they choose to replace their lawns.
“We thank the Desert Water Agency for partnering with the city to accelerate water wise landscaping as we move forward with conservation efforts,” said Mayor Lisa Middleton. “Palm Springs is committed to supporting our residents minimize their water usage during this severe drought.”
Low-income residents may be eligible for more funding to help pay for replacing grass with artificial turf.
The non-profit Desert Water Agency imports and manages groundwater for roughly 72,000 Coachella Valley residents, according to the agency’s website.
