Los Angeles County has proposed establishing a trauma center in Pomona.
The facility, which would serve that city as well as the eastern end of the San Gabriel Valley, is being planned by the County Department of Health Services, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
If approved by the Board of Supervisors, the trauma center would be located at the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center on Garey Avenue immediately north of Interstate 10. The proposal is part of a larger effort by the county to upgrade its trauma system after years of cutbacks, the report stated.
County officials have been trying for years to put a trauma center in that area. Currently, the closest trauma center to Pomona is the County-USC Medical Center in Los Angeles.
In the mid-1980s, the county had 22 trauma centers, but cuts in funding have reduced that number to 14, according to the report.
