“Promise Zone” Sought

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has approved a request for a federal Promise Zone that would cover a large part of the city of San Bernardino.

Promise Zones are partnerships between local entities and the U.S. government that seek to create jobs, increase private investment and economic activity, expand education and cut crime, according to a county statement.

“This is an amazing opportunity for our community,” Fifth District Supervisor Josie Gonzales said in the statement.

Under the agreement, which the board approved unanimously, the county and the city of San Bernardino will be the lead agencies seeking the Promise Zone designation. The county and the city will work with several other local agencies, including the San Bernardino County Unified School District, to submit the needed paperwork and implement a plan if the zone is approved.
