Proposed Tax to Appear on Menifee Ballot

Menifee voters this fall will decide whether to approve a one-percent sales tax that would be used to pay for several public services, including more police officers and measures designed to relieve traffic congestion.

The city council on Wednesday voted 5-0 to place the City of Menifee Public Safety, Traffic Congestion Relief and Vital City Services Measure on the Nov. 8 ballot, according to statement posted on the city’s website.

The measure is a proposed general tax, which means it only needs a simple majority to pass, said Gina Gonzalez, Menifee’s economic development manager.

If passed, the measure would generate about $7 million a year in extra revenue. Funds would be used to pay for as many as 15 police officers along with extra fire and paramedic service and road and street maintenance, Gonzalez said.

“It seems like everyone wants to live here.” Gonzalez said. “We have to keep up with our population growth.”
